Jim Kannar is the owner. Our first impression was he was very professional, open and honest about our thoughts and ideas for our project. Each meeting with him after that convinced us that his company was the right one for our remodel. His partner, Chuck Brunner, was very thorough and a pleasure to work with, as well. Our bathroom makeover came out even better than we imagined. Their project managers and tile specialists were very committed and we couldn't be happier with the end result. We plan to use them for our next project - the kitchen.

Home Design Elements and Aresh Mansoury (their project manager) were very easy to work with. My wife and I are both employed in the construction industry (trade association and engineer respectively). We did the design drawings for the permitting process and applied for the permits for this project. In addition, we provided all finish materials (tile, vanity, plumbing and electrical fixtures, doors, etc . . . ). Their tile work, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, sheetrock work was well done and well executed. Their tile setter was very good and worked with our tile floor design that was rather complex. It consisted of a border of 3/8” marble squares 3 rows of black, one row of white and two rows of gray. The field of the floor consists of mosaic white marble basket weave with 5/8” black dots. The border rows are straight and level as is the field of the floor. They worked with us to make changes after work began without making it complicated or adding expense. The changes were minor and they were treated appropriately as minor events. We added a bench in a large (3 1/2' by 7') walk-in shower stall. They passed all inspections on the first review. The sheet rock work was well done with invisible seams on smooth walls and clean ceiling and corner joints. My wife and I are thrilled with the bathroom and closet and enjoy it very much.

Jim and his team were excellent to work with. The work was finished on time and on budget. The best way to show how happy we were with his work was that we not only used him once but hired him and his team to come back 2 additional times and are even now looking to get him to do more work for us. Jim's team did quality work, cleaned up, and were professional. On of the best traits that I liked from working with Jim is that he would tell me a better way to do a job even if it was less money for him to do so. This built a lot of trust with me when Jim repeatedly offered up quality solutions to my issues that were less expensive than what I thought I initially needed done. Jim's team did a wide range of work from demolishing the old basement and bathroom, putting in new plumbing with fixtures, laying tile and carpet, drywall, electrical, painting, finish carpentry work hand building a new fireplace mantle, lighting, and design work.

I called 3 general contractors for estimates to finish off 2 rooms in our basement. The smaller room measured about 12' by 13' and the larger room was about 18' by 19'. The smaller room was to be my wife's craft room and the larger room was to be a media room. Of the 3 general contractors, I got the best "vibe" from Jim Kannar of HD Elements. He was friendly, patient and listened to what my needs/ideas for the rooms were. That's not to say the other two contractors weren't nice and polite; they were. I just felt right going with Jim and, after Jim told me a little about how he and his crew operated, I felt pretty confident that he and his crew would do a great job. eArmando, the project manager assigned to my job, was a pleasure to work with. He and his crew were courteous, punctual and cleaned up after every day of work. Their crew consisted of about 3 to 4 guys. They arrived in the mornings around 8 or 9 am and finished their day around 4 or 5 pm. For the media room, I requested that the walls be acoustically insulated. I suggested using Roxul insulation and Jim agreed and said that often used that material for media rooms. On top of that, Jim suggested doubling up on the ceiling drywall to further damp noise from upstairs room...wow! The other two contractors actually steered me away from using the Roxul insulation and suggested using regular insulation (from that, I sort of knew that they weren't listening to what I wanted and I mentally scratched them off my short list of contractors). When the crew installed the drywall, they used an over abundance (this is a good thing) of drywall screws as opposed to just using nails. This ensures the walls stay true (no sagging or bowing) for many years. I was thoroughly impressed with this technique. Also, the painters were very thorough with their work. They spackled, sanded, painted...then spackled and sanded and painted again to make sure the walls were perfectly smooth and evenly painted. These were just some aspects that probably separates Jim and HD Elements from other general contractors out there. Jim visited the house to inspect the work every few days over the 4-5 week period to make sure all was going well. After all was done and I paid my last installment check, I inquired with Jim about another room in the basement that we were considering having finished. To my surprise, Jim recommended that I NOT have it finished and to keep it as a storage room...wow! How many contractors would turn down a project to the benefit of the homeowner? I'd hire Jim and his crew again in a heart beat. His crew, namely Armando and his crew, are a hard working bunch and I appreciate their hard work and attention to detail.

The only reason I gave 5 stars for this company is because the owner took the time to make a situation that could have been bad a great experience. We had been looking for someone to finish my basement for a couple of months. During that time, we (wife and I) were picking out fixtures, we bought our huge TV, etc. When it came time to choose a contractor, we ended up with Home Design Elements after a referral from my Mom (used them for a powder room renovation). Anyway, what I liked about them was that they also have a design office, where they sell window treatments. We picked some curtains and small window treatments right in their location. When the basement was finished the windrow treatments arrived and were the wrong size. We were kind of bummed, because this was the last finishing touch. But - the owner, Jim, came out to our house himself - looked at the delivered blinds and said he would take care of it. The NEXT day - he came back with 2 guys from the crew - turns out that the hardware sets had been mis labeled - he had the correct fitting rods and hardware with him. He stayed the entire time while his crew get the curtains up - they ended up looking super. It's hard to find a company like that - where the owner is such a stand up guy. I'll do business with them again at the next opportunity.

I had multiple proposals but this was the only company that truly listened to my desires and explained in detail all the possible options and limitations associated with my basement project. They have a trustworthy, courteous and hardworking group of craftsman. They far exceeded all of our expectations and we would immediately turn to them if we were to have any additional renovation needs. These guys are full service, I never had to hire anyone other than Home Design Elements to transform my unfinished basement to our ultimate rec/family area (basement finish, wet bar, and dedicated media room). I didn’t have any regrets hiring Home Design Elements. The entire process went smoothly and according to plan from my first phone call to my last appointment.

We were referred to Home Design Elements by my Mother, who had her powder room remodeled last year. She had a good experience with them, so we didn't really shop. One of the things that sets this company apart is that they have a design showroom right there in Dulles - just across from Dulles Corner. Kind of different from other contractors. The basement finishing went pretty much as you would expect. There were no major drawbacks. I only gave a B on price because I didn't realize how expensive remodeling was! After talking with some friends and family, I know I got a fair price for what we got - the basement is really an extension of our living area now - we're down there constantly. I'm thrilled with result and all in all, I am happy with the process. I would recommend this company.
Sam C.
Hire them for an unfinished basement. They were prompt in returning my request when submitted in home advisor. They were middle of the road when it came to price on the three quotes. But my wife and I felt that they had the best value and overall value. They are currently working to wrap up the project. I will post more later.

Home Design Elements put in a basement walkout for me. Of all the people I talked to their price was the best and in line with what I expected. They were easy to work with to deliver just what I wanted. The walkout was done well and the crew was both kind and respectful. They made sure to use the extra dirt to cause the water to flow away from my house and also re-seeded where the grass was killed due to the work. I will be calling them back when I'm ready to finish my basement.

We were looking to upgrade our 20+ year kitchen in the possibility of moving and needing to get the best price for our house. After several estimates, and some saying right off there was no way they could perform the renovation for our budget (not including appliances), Home Design Elements was the only one who understood what we were looking for and said he could meet my budget. He even made suggestions and steered us away from making extra expenditures that were not needed. As planned, work started on time and finished in the 3 week time frame that was promised, even with the extra work I asked them to do. The work crew were wonderful and very polite. Space was always left neat and clean each evening. I can't say enough about the positive experience I had working with Home Design Elements and look forward to more projects with them.

Home Design Elements was awesome and I would recommend them without hesitation. We had a kitchen remodel in a previous home that was a DISASTER and we were leery of taking on another kitchen project. We got three estimates for this job and Home Design Elements was the most professional, by far, and their quote was very competitive. I am a Realtor and I knew this firm from two complete house remodels that they had done for colleagues of mine. I wasn't sure they would take on less than a whole-house remodel but Home Design Elements president, Jim Kannar, could not have been more accommodating. The workers were, without exception, professional, punctual and considerate and Jim stayed on top of the project from start to finish. Share on Band of Neighbors: Yes

Great design, excellent installation and quality materials. Very happy with the sales process and the delivery and mostly the final result. Sure, you can find a cheaper system, but not a cheaper custom system. No way will ELFA or the Home Depot come close to maximizing the space. We are very happy with the design and all the new space and storage we have...much more than we had hoped for... Our neighbors had recommended them, and at first we were hesitant to spend this much money on shelving. But once we looked at what we could do, and how much that would assist in de-cluttering our mudroom, it was really well worth the money spent. They even hung up a few extra components for us--that they did not sell but fit really well with the design. For their flexibility, pricing, and installation, I give them an excellent recommendation. You will not go wrong working with them.
Pat M. POTOMAC FALLS, VA
Arash was very pleasant to work with. Their prices were a competitive, and they came very highly recommended from other new homeowners in our area. The work was relatively painless for us, since they were able to get into our new home before closing to measure the windows. Installation occurred soon after we moved in and was also relatively painless. The work was done well and the quality of the products was very good. I would have no reservations about recommending their services.
Robert D. Clarksburg, MD
They picked up and repaired our kitchen duo blinds. They are battery operated so when they failed they had to come out and fix them. They picked them up and repaired them and then brought them back to reinstall. They installed them across one window and then three windows in a row which is a very wide duo shade.
Paula O. Mclean, VA
They did some design work for us when we had a house built. They did the closets, and they possibly did the blinds too. They did really well with the closets.
David W. Silver Spring, MD
They did custom graver blinds on about 13 windows in an investment property. It was perfect! They made it very easy. They came in and measured and called me when they were ready. They made it very convenient for me. Everything went smoothly. I recommend them all the time.

The master closet had been a constant source of problems. The previous homeowners had installed wire shelving that was literally falling apart. We also had closet space in our extra bedroom in our basement that bumped up against the unfinished part of the basement. This area needed to be finished off and closet organizers installed. After an initial visit, our designer came back with a couple ideas to make the organization so much better than it had been. During the time we were getting the proposal, we investigated self-install options, of which there are many. I quickly decided that I was not going to go through the hassle of buying the system and fighting the installation. Although price was a concern, after meeting with the designer and getting all the details, we decided to move forward. Couple things I really liked: New ideas and the fact that they had done this many times before. It was clear that they knew what they were doing.

We have a two story window in our family room that has been in need of an update for a long time. The team at Home Design Elements helped us select a style that matched our home, measured, ordered and installed it for us. The whole process was smooth and painless. They offer a great selection and really know what they are talking about, we trusted their judgement and it looks great! The window used to be a little bit of an eye sore for us and now we are proud of how it looks and how the update makes the room feel. I would recommend them to anyone looking to update their window treatments! We were very, very happy with their service

I solicited 3 bids for this project and Home Design Elements was very competitive-they weren't the highest or lowest but the confidence level and construction knowledge exhibited by Jim Kannar and his foreman at the initial meeting convinced me that they were the right team to handle this project. Having a construction background myself, I have always been cautious about contractors but can honestly tell you I was thoroughly pleased with all the work they performed on this project. Home Design Elements really delivered on everything we discussed, the project came in on time, on budget and the quality of work was outstanding. Jim Kannar and I had a great working relationship, the communication was always precise, the follow up was consistent and they delivered on what they said they would do. Jim's team included what I would consider true craftsman-from the fixture installation to the finish work, I was constantly surprised and pleased by the level of quality workmanship being exhibited by his team. This was a great experience and I would highly recommend HD Elements and Jim Kannar to anyone contemplating any remodeling or construction project-you will be pleased. Great reliability!

The crew of workers were all extremely skilled and we are very pleased with the finished project. The job was finished in less than two weeks and did not go over budget. JIM'S COMPANY IS ONE OF THE BEST CONTRACTORS WE HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF DOING BUSINESS WITH. 20+ YEARS IN THE REAL ESTATE TRADE I HAVE SEEN COMPANIES COME AND GO AND HAVE DEALT WITH MANY ON A TRADE BASIS. HOME DESIGN ELEMENTS BLOWS AWAY THE COMPETITION. THEY WILL BE PROVIDING THE D.C AREA WITH THEIR SERVICES FOR MANY YEARS TO COME......KUDOS AND THANKS FROM TRACI AND I!

All of our communication was the over phone. It was easy to get ahold of them and they were good about keeping in contact with me, but I just had a busy schedule at the time. They were very conscientious.
James K. - Berryville, VA
They did very well. We are happy with it. They finished the job in about 5 hours and everything went smoothly. They were very fast and they got everything resolved quickly.
Rodney G. - Clarksburg, MD
The service was about 5 years ago so some of the details are a bit hazy, but we have been very happy. They did a nice job with installation. The price was surprisingly good and we got much more for our budget than we were expecting.
Alan S. - Mclean, VA
We have hired them a number of times over the last 2 years. They have always done a good job! They are very responsive and good with calling back.
Robert K. - Alexandria, VA
I love my closets! I’m happy with the quality. It was all done well, but the company was going through some changes so we dealt with a couple different people. It has been some time (6 years) so some of the details are hazy.
Patti V. - Vienna, VA
The first time I hired them, everything went very smoothly. About a year later, they did the bedroom shades. I knew exactly what I wanted the second time around. They finished the bedroom this spring. I would still recommend them because they are a good group. They are a small, quality organization with a great showroom. They are pricier and I could have gone to another store, but I just wanted something with more quality. The installer produces quality work.
Tamzen R. - Great Falls, VA
Jim and his team were responsive and followed through on what they said they would do. I ordered all of the materials and coordinated appliance and cabinet delivery and storage and counter top measuring and installation. I did not order enough tile, so his team needed to return to finish without additional cost or complain. Jim was open to feedback on the performance of his team and made sure the project was finished well. The crew asked questions when they were not clear with the instructions.

This was an excellent experience overall. The job was finished on budget with no surprises, even though we made several changes to the original plan as we progressed. The job completed about 3 weeks behind schedule because of weather and because of delays with suppliers providing the specific carpet that we chose. We were kept involved in the entire process by Jim Kannar, the contractor. We are very happy with the quality of the workmanship, materials and adherence to our design. Jim provided the necessary liaison with his crew, and we were satisfied with the operation. They were consistently clean, careful and respectful of our property and worked hard to minimize noise and other impacts outside of the work area. They were willing to work extended hours to complete tasks, and were careful to check with us before arriving early or working late. They planted several bushes and did significant landscaping around the exterior construction of the new window well. We have been extremely pleased with this project and would recommend Jim's company for anyone doing this kind of renovation.

I had a broken string on a blind and brought it in for to be sent for repair with the manufacturer. Jay was great in telling me it would take 2-4 weeks as long as nothing was wrong with the blind. It is in a set of 9 blinds in a green shade - so it has to all match. Jay pushed the manufacturer to respond quickly. The blind was not repairable but Jay suggested sending all blinds in to see if they were defective too and I could get them all replaced as they are 11 years old and original to the house. Jay pushed for 1/2 price motor upgrades and loop upgrades for windows [half of the blinds are in 2 story area]. My color was discontinued but after much negotiating on Jay's part - they upgraded everything and the broken blind was to be returned so we could use it in the corner non functioning. We didn't want to pay $4000 for all new blinds - even though that is a deal. Upon installation, it was discovered the broken blind had been discarded by the manufacturer. Jay again jumped to my defense and we got 9 new blinds in a green color with upgraded motors and continuous loops. So, during this 3 month process Jay stayed on top of manufacturer and was a great customer advocate. It is rare to find customer service like this any more!

They were excellent. I would like to particularly thank Jay Peralta. It didn't fit properly when they first brought it to repair (due to manufacturer issues). They were nice and courteous throughout the entire process. They fixed the issue with the measurements. They were just as gracious as anything. I would highly recommend them!

After moving in to a new community in the Broadlands, my neighbor recommended Home Design for blinds and shades. I was aware that their services were available during the construction of my home however I decided to wait until I moved in to get a better feel of the lighting and illumination through out my home before making any decisions. I met at their showroom. Similar layout to Next Day Blinds with additions of closet organizers, built-ins, home offices, counter tops, and a few other things. The design process was smooth and simple. Our design consultant was very knowledgeable. In fact they already had our measurements and dimensions of our model home so we didn't have to worry about acquiring that on our own which I thought was very helpful. I had an idea on what I wanted but I was open to suggestions. He recommended a few things which I didn't think about such as uniform the front facing windows and adding a few room darkening elements in the bedrooms and energy efficient shades on larger windows. The consultation took about an hour and the price we were quoted was right in our budget. The blinds and shades look great in our home. The installation was on time and most important neat and respectful to our home. The brand we chose offered a lifetime warranty. They operate very smoothly and we are very happy with our selections.

Let me say this first before I put down the review for this company that I am a perfectionist and at times its very hard for me to get professionally satisfied. Having said that, let me say that dealing with this company was the most perfectly satisfying experience I ever had. I took quote from 3 different vendors and 2 of them were independent contractors. I had expect the independent contracts to be more affordable since they would have less overhead but to my surprise their prices were probably couple of hundred dollars cheaper than Home Design elements! Anyhow initially foolishly, I went with the independent contractor first but those 2 guys just left me standing at home depot when I refused to pay them more than what they had initially agreed upon. On the other hand, when I spoke to Arash at Home Design elements he was the most honest, professional and polite person to deal with. In fact, he actually encouraged me to go with the other guys if the precise were better. But fortunately I ended up work with Arash. I called him back and he wrote up the contract with utmost perfection and meticulously wrote down every single detail of the project. He gave me the right advice from the beginning and guided me through the whole process. I wanted this project to be completed by Thanks Giving and I knew this was a tall order and I did not have any hopes that Home design elements was going to fulfil this promise but to my surprise, they were at my house even on the thanksgiving morning doing the finishing touch on the wet bar!!! I owe special thanks to Arash for exceptional project management skills and Armando for his outstanding workmanship! Armando was executing the different stages of the project with such passion as if he was building a wet bar for himself! They could have cut corners to deliver a job with the same money but the whole team always went above and beyond! I never once hand to run around to get them to come to work, their team would show up every morning right on time and they finish the job in 3 days! Here is my advice to all those skeptics out there, and believe me I was one too, that take the plunge with these guys they will not disappoint you! Everything was clearly explained before the project started and was delivered to the letter and spirit when the project was completed. I hope to have more work done in the future with the help of Arash and team at Home Design elements. Thanks.
